Professor Ford is Chief Executive of the Oxford Academic Health Science Network and Vice Chair of the national AHSN Network.  He graduated from Cambridge University in Medicine and held a Clinical Pharmacology Fellowship at Stanford University. He returned to the UK and established a comprehensive stroke service in Newcastle in the early 1990s.

He held the Jacobson Chair of Clinical Pharmacology at Newcastle University from 2007-2013. He has been involved in many service innovations in UK stroke care in the last 20 years including developing the first thrombolysis protocol for acute stroke in England. He developed the Face Arm Speech Test (FAST) now used across the world to increase public and professional awareness of stroke. From 2005-2013 he was Director of the National Institute for Health Research Stroke Research Network. He continues to practise as an Consultant Physician in acute stroke Oxford.
