Dame Fiona Caldicott
National Data Guardian for Health and Social Care
Dame Fiona Caldicott is the National Data Guardian for Health and Social Care. In 2016 she published a review of data security, consent and opt-outs, which made recommendations to strengthen the security of health and care information and ensure that people can make informed choices about how their data is used. Her previous independent reviews in this area (in 1997 and 2013) had considerable influence on the health and care services and led to the appointment of Caldicott Guardians in NHS provider and social care organisations.
Dame Fiona has held a wide variety of roles in the past. She recently retired from her 10-year position as Chair of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She has also worked at South Birmingham Mental Health NHS Trust, where she held several positions: Consultant and Senior Clinical Lecturer in Psychotherapy, Unit General Manager, Clinical Director and Medical Director.
Whilst President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (1993-1996) she was also Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (1995-1996). She served as Principal of Somerville College in the University of Oxford from 1996-2010 and as Pro-Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for Personnel and Equality.
